ABOUT SHOPRECYCLE - How it started
Shoprecycle was set up to enable and encourage people to shop more sustainably and to help reduce and divert the amount of material that is constantly being put into landfill.
It began as an idea whilst I was promoting the kerbside recycling collections around the South West. Recycling was being encouraged but there didn't seem to be anywhere that sold a variety of household and everyday products that were all made from recycled material. People were concerned about what happened to the materials that were going in the box. I was aware that the loop needed to be closed and the availability of such goods should be made widely available.
The seed was sown and I began to source recycled products intent on opening a shop. Initially I wanted to only sell goods made in the UK but this proved very difficult if I was to have more than a few products! This showed that there is a gap in our market of recycled items and UK consumers need to show manufacturers that there is a real desire to buy recycled, everyday products and fashion items and that we do care about the resources involved in making a product. Ultimately, manufacturers need to realise the damage that constantly using virgin materials causes to the environment and that abusing people's human rights simply to produce cheaper products is attributing to the big divide between the world's rich and poor.
As the availability of recycled products is limited in the UK, some items sold by Shoprecycle are produced in other countries but it is our policy to make sure that they are made by people who have a fair wage, who are working in places with good standards and that the product is transported by sea rather than air. We hope that as more people become aware of buying recycled and prefer to buy recycled, more goods produced in the UK will be made available. It is Shoprecycle's aim to show people that a throwaway society is not a society that can go on and on and that recycling and re using materials will help limit environmental damage to the planet.
Shoprecycle's aim is to provide a large selection of recycled goods, initially bags but expanding to an online store where you can buy household items, gifts and accessories which are all made from recycled materials or industial waste. Shoprecycle would like to increase the production and availability of recycled products thus closing the loop and making our shopping more sustainable. These products will be sourced from companies with good ethical policies, fair-trade values and will be of high quality.
