Shoprecycle bags made from recycled Juice cartons
Juice cartons are made from a mixture of plastic, foil and cardboard and are expensive to separate for recycling. In the UK, cartons such as these are mainly thrown into landfill where they lie for hundreds of years, releasing toxins into the atmosphere. It is best to avoid buying this type of packaging and buy products that are in plastic bottles which can then be recycled. Shoprecycle sells bags made from attractive, hard wearing and bright material made from juice cartons, some of which is woven. The used and discarded cartons are collected and cleaned before being made or woven into bags and purses. The co operative in the Philipines that makes these products began as an environmental project with the aim of cleaning and greening the local neighbourhood. It has become very successful, employing 100 local women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Buying these products not only helps to divert a huge amount of non biodegradable, toxic material from landfill but also helps to better the lives of struggling families in the Philipines.
